The top of a pole strikes me as a really poor location for a seismic station!
I've seen boxes on streetlights and powerpoles with small antennas, I assumed
they were for monitoring utility equipment.
Braddock's photo at the start of the thread definitely looks like a weather
station to me, based on the 3-cup anemometer at the upper left of the photo.
